Surf fishers in Delaware have until Feb. 1 to snag state park vehicle permits before fees go up, and a finite period before the newly implemented cap hits 17,000.
The governor’s parks and recreation advisory council voted Thursday to raise prices and limit the number of permits that can be purchased annually.
Surf fishing permits will go up by $10, totaling $90, and out-of-state users, who account for nearly one-fourth of permit holders, will pay $20 more at $180. The permits provide access to all Delaware state parks for the year.
Two-year permits can be purchased at the current price before Feb. 1, so some holders won't be affected by the increase until 2021.
“Implementing a first-come, first-served cap on the number of permits issued is the best way to be equitable to all beach users, to manage a limited resource, and to protect against overcrowding our beaches in the future,” State Parks Director Ray Bivens said in a release.
